Canada's oldest modern dance company, Winnipeg's Contemporary Dancers, begins its 45th year on October 15th with Freya Björg Olafson's AVATAR. A co-presentation with the artist & núna (now) this performance is part of an ongoing series that explores methods of creating, validating and disseminating one’s identity through the use of technology and the Internet. The work is inspired by the mantra 'I post therefore I am' whereby Internet users legitimize their existence by documenting their lives and uploading this media to personal webpages and blogs. 'In AVATAR Olafson plays with concepts of identity construction and performance on the Internet. Incorporating found YouTube audio footage, dance, the Macintosh software application Photobooth and fragmented images from her personal life, Olafson weaves a compelling duet with her computer. Her performance interlaces the distorted ironic documentary grumblings of a female video blogger exposing personal body issues and insecurities with the artist's own responsive movements and actions.' Each performance ends with artist and audience interaction
