... are putting on a show. Former WCD Artistic Director Tom Stroud and a handful of others with past and current links to WCD are presenting a movement-based theatrical performance entitled The Rite.
The Rite takes for its inspiration the infamously riotous 1913 premiere of The Ballet Russeʼs The Rite of Spring. Composed by Igor Stravinsky and choreographed by Valslav Nijinski, the performance stunned audiences with its primitive movement, driving rhythms, dissonant crescendos, and swelling sensuality. The Rite of Spring foreshadowed the shock waves that would rock the Western World for the first half of the 20th century, and has come to symbolize the human capacity for horror and revolution. If change demands sacrifice, what are we prepared to lose for the sake of renewal? When should we hang on? When should we let go? The Rite funnels these forces to create a fluid and arresting world populated by 5 people caught between primal violence and peace ... illusion and reality ... freedom and imprisonment ...
